Founded in the 1820s at the intersection of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers as a control to trade and travel, Historic Fort Snelling has been recently reconstructed to its original layout and appearance. Now, visitors to the fort can observe aspects of 19th century military life on such isolated outposts, including the furnishings of ordinary soldiers and ranking officers, the medical facilities and the schoolhouse for children living at the fort. Costumed interpreters show various everyday skills and crafts, run military demonstrations and enhance the historical feel of the site. Located within the much larger Fort Snelling State Park, the living history complex is next to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
